My name is Martin Ryman and I am an experienced music teacher based in Kelburn, Wellington. I help students to build a strong foundation of fundamental skills that enable them to play most styles of music. My lessons are tailored to fit individual needs, whether students are preparing for a particular exam or to improve their skills and technique. Lessons are held at a home studio in Kelburn.
There is a bus stop near the house, and the studio is only a 5 minute walk from the Kelburn shops.

Martin Ryman M.Mus (Distinction) B.Mus (Executant) A.R.C.O. Dip. Tchg. Registered TeacherI'm a registered teacher with many years' experience of teaching music at Primary and Secondary schools as well as private teaching of piano and music theory. I can also offer lessons in harpsichord and organ. I love teaching serious students who are aiming for tertiary studies and careers in music, as well as anyone who wishes to learn music as a hobby or who is learning music at school. I have a thorough knowledge of The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music syllabus and The Trinity College syllabus as well as music for NCEA, Levels 1, 2 and 3. I am very patient and know how to cultivate a love of music in children. I tailor lessons to the needs and desires of individual students and can also prepare students for exams. The Kelburn Music Studio is equipped with a good piano and a harpsichord by Paul Downie.
I studied the piano at Auckland University, with Janetta McStay and Professor Peter Godfrey. Further studies followed at the Royal College of Music, London under Nicholas Danby and at Oxford with Dr Walter Hillsman where I trained as an organist and choral director. While in the UK I gave many organ recitals there in cathedrals and abbeys. I have been a Director of Music at several schools and in 1993 won a New Zealand Music Award for a recording of the Fauré Requiem made with the chapel choir of Wanganui Collegiate School and members of the Wellington Sinfonia.
In 2004 I was awarded a Master of Music with Distinction in organ and harpsichord performance from Victoria University.
I've tutored Music in the Renaissance and Baroque periods at The New Zealand School of Music.
Since 2007 I've organised several concerts with students from the New Zealand School of Music. In 2011 I formed Cecilia Music, an organisation which promotes young emerging talent. To date there have been concerts of lieder, Bach's Coffee Cantata and the Leçons de Ténèbres by François Couperin.
